You need to keep your teeth in a good condition. If you do not, then you might need to have them removed or need fillings in your cavities. Both of these procedures are painful and costly, so if at all possible you want to avoid them. With that in mind, here are three ways to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

Clean Your Teeth

You need to make sure that you brush your teeth twice per day. This means brushing them once in the morning when you wake up and then again in the evening before bed. This makes sure that you clean your teeth fully and that you are cleaning away any plaque and bacteria. When you are brushing your teeth, you need to make sure that you are also brushing your gums and that you are not applying too much pressure. Brushing your gums help to keep them healthy. If you brush too hard, then you run the risk of removing the enamel from your teeth and doing the opposite of what you intended to do by brushing your teeth. After you have brushed your, you will want to floss. After that, you should wait a few minutes and then use mouthwash. You do not want to use mouthwash immediately after brushing as it will not be as effective. If you do all of these twice per day, then you will be looking after your teeth and helping to ensure that they remain as healthy as possible.

Avoid Acidic and Sugary Food

As any family dentist will tell you, if you let your kids eat too many sugary foods and drinks, then it will damage their teeth. You will want to stay away from foods that contain high levels of sugar and anything that is overly acidic. This means things like candy and soft drinks. Both of these can cause severe damage to your teeth. In order to avoid this, you need to cut these things out of your diet. You can replace them with healthier alternative that are going to help both your teeth and the rest of your body. If you replace unhealthy candy with something like carrots, then you will be getting additional nutrients. You can also replace soft drinks with a glass of milk. Milk contains calcium which is important for maintaining healthy teeth.

Chew Gum

It might come as a surprise to you, but chewing gum can actually be good for your teeth. Certain types of chewing gum contain something that helps to neutralize the acid in your mouth and stop plaque and bacteria sticking to your teeth. After you have a meal, all you need to do is chew on some gum for a bit, and you will help to keep your teeth healthy. You should not, however, rely on this as the only way of maintaining your teeth. It isn’t a replacement for brushing your teeth or an excuse to each acidic and sugary food. However, it can help you maintain the health of your teeth when you are out and about.
