We all have moments when we feel unhappy, stressed or anxious. It’s natural to experience a range of emotions, but most of us strive to be happy. If you long to feel more settled and content, here are some positive steps to take.
Try to live in the moment
Have you ever noticed that you feel anxious or uneasy when you dwell on the past or think about the future too much? Sometimes, we get so carried away thinking about the past or the future that we forget to live in the present. It can be difficult to be present, but make an effort to focus on what is happening now. Don’t waste energy worrying about things you can’t change that might or might not happen in the future.
Understand what makes you tick
We are all different and that’s what makes the human population so fascinating. Embrace your uniqueness and understand what makes you tick. What matters to you may not be the same as what matters to other people, and you may find meaning or happiness in activities, beliefs or relationships that others don’t. Get to know yourself and identify what makes you feel happy and content. You might learn and grow from taking an online Christianity course, going traveling or undertaking studies in a subject that intrigues you, for example. You may feel blissfully happy when you’re in nature or you’re surrounded by your best friends. Once you know what makes you truly happy, devote more time to the relevant people, interests, places or activities.
Stop comparing yourself to others
It’s easier said than done, especially in the age of social media, but if you can stop comparing yourself to others, this can be incredibly beneficial for your mental health. It’s human nature to make comparisons, but if it makes you question yourself or put yourself down, this isn’t healthy. Understand that social media offers a rose-tinted glimpse into other peoples’ lives and try to focus on your happiness. Don’t put pressure on yourself to be like others or hit milestones set out by society, and be kinder to yourself. Most of us are harsh critics when it comes to self-appraisal.
Try to be grateful
We live in a society where wanting more is ingrained in us. We have access to everything we could possibly need and this can sometimes make us lose sight of the value and importance of the simple things. Try to be grateful for what you already have and recognize that material goods don’t always bring happiness and success doesn’t always equate to being wealthy. Take pleasure in the simple things that don’t cost anything, such as spending time with friends and family, exploring, listening to music and appreciating the sunset.
It’s natural to experience a broad spectrum of emotions, especially if you’re going through a traumatic period in your life. If you long to feel happy, there are ways to achieve contentment. Try to live in the moment and focus on the present and get to know what makes you tick and makes you happy. Avoid comparing yourself to others and be grateful for what you already have.
