We are often told that living in the now is what matters, and while this is true for the majority of our time, it doesn’t hurt to think about our future,  occasionally.

In fact, it is by thinking about what we would like our tomorrows to be like that we get the motivation and energy to make healthy changes today. A topic you can find out all about in the post below.

Move your body.

One action that you can start doing today that will help you have a healthier tomorrow is moving your body more. The reason being that many of us spend most of our days behind a desk, something which is terrible for our physical and mental well being.

In fact, by exercising more regularly, you can not only help to keep your weight at a healthy range but also strengthen your muscle and keep your joints flexible as well. All these being things that will definitely contribute to a healthier tomorrow.

Of course, it’s always best to start any regime of exercise relatively slow. That means, rather than putting on your shorts and attempting a 10K when you haven’t run for years, pick something more manageable instead.

One such activity may be swapping your daily commute into work for a walk or bike ride. Alternatively, you may wish to invest in a gym membership and slowly increase the time you work there over a few week and months.

You may even decide that dancing is how your body most loves to move and join a class! It really is up to you, as long as you get that body moving more!

Learn to meditate.

Health isn’t just about our bodies, but our minds as well, and this is where meditation comes in. In fact, learning this skill is something that can help you to cope more healthily with any stress in your life both now, and in the future.

Don’t panic if you not a sit down and listen to whale sounds type of person though, as you can still learn to meditate. This is because there are many forms of meditation including mindfulness exercises like a guided body scan, mindful yoga, and even just watching the breath, as well as walking meditations, tai chi, and even ones where you get to dance.

In fact, the key to meditation is learning to observe thoughts and bodily sensations without getting attached to them. What this means is that it’s not so much that one form is right, but rather you just need to find the type that best enables you to do this.

Quit smoking.

You’d have to be pretty out of the loop these days not to realize those smoking cigarettes is harmful to you. However, the increase in cancer risk, COPD cases, as well as a myriad of other conditions as a smoker ages, is something that many try and put to the back of their mind.

Obviously, this is because what they get from smoking is the hit of nicotine, which is a highly addictive substance. Unfortunately, this also come along with a nasty cocktail of other additives that are known to be permanently damaging to our bodies.

That is why, if you are looking to improve your health in the future, one of the most important things that you can do today is to quit, or at least cut-down.

Luckily, some products can help you to do this, including nicotine patches, and gum. Some people even choose to swap out their cigarettes for a vape pen instead, as this provides the nicotine, but without the rest of the nasties. You can even get some fruity and fun vape pen flavors now. Something that much improves the experience compared to smoking a cigarette, which tends to taste and smell awful.

Start a gratitude journal.

‘You will never be happy with what you get if you don’t know how to be happy with what you already have,’ is a saying that many people hear but don’t always understand. Of course, what it means is that if we are always striving for something to be different or something new to make us happy, we miss the wonderful things that are already benefiting us in our lives.

To that end, one simple thing you can start doing today that will help you to have a happier and healthier future is to make a gratitude journal. It’s simple to do as well, as all you need is a diary, notebook, or an app on your phone where you can record at least three things that you are grateful for every day.

Of course, when you do this, it can really help your perspective to shift and put you in a more positive mood right away. It can also help you be less goal-driven over the long term. Something that means it will be much easier to enjoy your life in the future without setting up so many targets which you spend all of your time trying to achieve, and none of your time enjoying.

Find something that replenishes your spirit.

Finally, if you want a healthier tomorrow, it is wise to find something that fills you up rather than drains you. Of course, this will be something different for each person, as while one person may practice a hobby like creating art to be replenished, another may pray, spend time with their family, or even indulge in some self-care.

Once again, it is less the content of the activity that matters here, but the effect that doing it has on the person. In fact, it’s pretty simple to tell if an activity replenishes you or not by whether you enjoy the process of doing it rather than just the end results.

Once you have found such activity, it’s important to begin practicing it right away. The reason being that it can not only improve your mood now but be a feature of your life that enhances its quality over many tomorrows.
