One of the biggest misconceptions about people with disabilities is that they don’t have the social skills to understand what love truly means, or they don’t want to have a significant other. I’m here to tell you that it is false. People with disabilities have the same desire as anyone else to have a relationship.
I’ve always been a hopeless romantic. I’ve dreamt of the day I would get married in the Smokey Mountains of Tennessee and ride off in the Gen. Lee from the “Dukes of Hazzard.” My experience dating in society with a disability has always been challenging, but I didn’t want to just share my experience with dating; I wanted to bring awareness to dating with a disability.
As a person with a condition such as cerebral palsy putting yourself out there in the dating scene since let’s be honest, society could be very judgmental just by your condition. However, you shouldn’t let that stop you from finding your true beau or gal so what are some of the first steps to entering the dating world.
Be in love with yourself – Falling in with your disability is the first thing you have to do is love yourself before you even think about finding your perfect beau or gal if you’re not in love with yourself.
Be confident – Being confident in yourself will come along away when it comes to attracting the person you trying to get a date with.
Make humor out of your disability – Making humor about your disability is sometimes the best way to get a Beau or gal’s attention and it takes away from making a situation awkward for example one time I was talking to a young man and I got caught spastic attack and I said Cerebral palsy is having a party .
Be yourself- being yourself is quite the easiest way to get a young lad attention’s and it shows them that your disability doesn’t stop you from going out and having fun.
Never be negative about your disability around your potential panter – always reminding positive about your disability is something that will allow your partner to look past your disability vs if your negative about your condition and complain about it then it will turn off a person.
Don’t rush into things – one of the common mistakes as people with disabilities is that when we meet someone that we take a romantic interest we tend to want to rush into a relationship because we have the fear of being alone. Don’t rush into anything take the time out to get to know your date and enjoy it.
Overall dating with a disability could be a life-changing experience and emotional one at that but I hope this article helps single people with disabilities find the one
